I’m sure you’re all very excited to practice some more calculations. This week we are adding another new skill to your conversion tool belt: how to convert between moles and energy. Let’s practice your new skill. Using your calculations from last week you will compare the amount of energy you use. For fun you could compare it to an alternative for of travel like how much energy it takes to drive versus ride a bike.
By the end of this Discussion, you will:
- Use your skills to calculate and compare the energy used by your car
- Learn about an alternative energy
1- Calculate the amount of energy you would use to drive your car in a week (hint: use your calculations from last week). You’ve already determined the amount of moles of octane you used in last week’s discussion, now convert that to energy (Calories) using the enthalpy of that octane combustion reaction. Below is the heat of reaction for the combustion of octane
C8H18 + 12.5 O2 –> 8 CO2 + 9 H2O △△H= -5476 KJ
(Optional) If you’re feeling up to it, how would you determine which one is more cost effective a bike or a car? What energy would you use to bike the same distance? Some helpful estimates: biking at a moderate speed of 12 to 14 miles per hour will cause a person to burn 298 Calories in 30 minutes.
2- Watch this video and comment on the use of algae as an energy source. What kinds of pros and cons can you think of for using algae? Share at least 1 pro and 1 con. (Optional: share another alternative energy source)We Can Power The World With Algae!
