Final Writing Assignment

HIS106 History of Globalization

Fall 2021

Prof. Paulino

For your final writing essay assignment you are required to write a 5-6 page draft paper based on the primary and secondary sources and readings assignments you have been collecting and required to upload to our BB class webpage. I will not be accepting email attachments copies of your paper. Unfortunately, I cannot.

Please upload your final paper to BB by the due date: Monday December 13, 11:59pm.

For the second draft workshop due on Monday November 1 you are required to have sent a copy of your draft essay to your fellow group members and then to have your essay ready to review during class. During the draft workshop#2 each group will be reviewing each other’s essays in breakout rooms. Please feel free to email or speak with me in class if you have any questions.

For your final assignment you are responsible for answering all of the following questions below in essay form. Although your group members will examine the same acts/laws your primary sources will differ and that is what will make your essays somewhat different from each other (although some of your secondary sources will inevitably be similar).

Group #1

Immigration Act of 1882; Scott Act of 1888; Fong Yueng Ting vs. United States (1892); Extension of the Chinese Exclusion Act (1904)

Group #2

Elk v Wilkins (1884); The Dawes Allotment Act (1887); Immigration Act of 1891; Immigration Act of 1903

Group #3

Immigration Act of 1917; Jones-Shafroth Act (1917); Thind V United States (1923); Immigration Act of 1924

Group #4

Undesirable Aliens Act of 1929 (Blease’s Law);  Korematsu v United States (1944); Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (2012, DACA); Muslim Travel Ban (2017)

You are required to answer all of the final exam questions below in essay form. Each question is worth 10 points. Be very specific. Use and cite relevant evidence especially primary sources. Please use APA citation.

  1. Describe in detail what your group’s first act/law is?
  2. Describe in detail what your group’s second act/law is?
  3. Describe in detail what your group’s third act/law is?
  4. Describe in detail what your group’s fourth act/law is?

  6. Describe in detail the historical context in which your group’s second act/law emerged. In other words describe the political climate of the United States at that time that led or gave impetus to the rise of each of these laws.
  7. Describe in detail the historical context in which your group’s  third act/law emerged. In other words describe the political climate of the United States at that time that led or gave impetus to the rise of each of these laws.
  8. Describe in detail the historical context in which your group’s  fourth act/law emerged. In other words describe the political climate of the United States at that time that led or gave impetus to the rise of each of these laws.
  9. Compare and contrast one of your group’s acts/laws with one from another group in the class. How are they similar? How are they different?
  10.  After reading De Leon’s Land of the Open Graves give one example of how the United States can stop/eliminate Prevention through Deterrence? How do you remove the desert from the equation of migrants crossing the border into the USA without documents?

Remember: for each question you must answer it by citing one or more primary and secondary sources. And the source cannot be Wikipedia or a Google search or some obscure website.

(Remember along with your primary sources you must include at least a one-page bibliography page containing both primary and secondary written sources that you consulted and cited to write your paper and prepare your group presentations. These sources will focus on your theme’s group and the theme’s historical moment in question. The secondary sources can also be books, articles, films etc.). Again: You must include a bibliography. It must be at least one page. Keep quotes to a minimum.

I expect all essay papers to be typed (size 12 point font) with 1 inch margins and double-

spaced lines. Check this very carefully. Please use double-spacing in your paper. Every page

should have a corresponding page number. At the top of the first page of your paper you should provide the paper’s title, your name, the course section, the time your class meets, your group #, and the due date.  I will NOT accept draft papers via email. I expect your essay to show that you have thought critically about your sources. Plagiarism will receive an automatic zero. For your final essay I will grade on the following: grammar, punctuation, evidence and logic of your argument; the effectiveness of analyzing your primary sources and the knowledge you display about your primary sources.

Below is the extra credit assignment. You can add it below your final essay so that both can be in one file.

# 2 Draft workshop draft of paper of due: Monday November 16, 2020.
