Learning organizations, according to Morgan, have to develop skills and mind-sets that embrace environmental change as a norm. (Morgan, 2006, p. 88). The late Mr. Argyris informed us that discovering error constitutes the first step toward learning. (Argyris, 1997, p. 301). All organizations, not just educational institutions, operate using a set of tacit assumptions, often invisible even to those within them. (Tagg, 2007, p. 37). Many organizations have become proficient at single-loop learning, developing an ability to scan the environment, set objectives, and monitor the general performance of the system in relation to these objectives. (Morgan, 2006, p. 84). However, the ability to achieve proficiency at double-loop learning often proves more elusive. (Morgan, 2006, p.86). Productive reasoning is required to design and implement actions that encourage double-loop learning and lead to effective change. (Argyris, 1997, p. 307). Leaders must, as Morgan notes, evolve designs that allow them to become skilled in the art of double-loop learning, to avoid getting trapped in single-loop processes, especially those created by traditional management control systems and the defensive routines or organizational members. (Morgan, 2006, p. 87).
The Bible verse above, spoken by Jesus Christ, prophesied Simon Peter’s denial of Him that would come in the later chapters of the book of John. Jesus’ reinstatement of Peter serves as a classic example of double-loop learning in the Bible. Peter had denied Jesus three times, as evidenced in John 18:17, Luke 22:60, and Matthew 26:74. Even after all that Jesus went through from the time of his trial, crucifixion, and resurrection, He still made it a point to reinstate Peter in John 21:15-23. Dr. Boa expertly points out, Jesus penetrated to the heart of the problem and of the man who had the problem. (Boa, 2021). He realized that good behavior grows out of a good heart. (Boa, 2021).
We can learn a lot based on Jesus’ story with Peter and how being intellectually conscious of our worldview helps us to understand the worldviews of others. If Jesus hadn’t restored Peter, he might not have shown up in a big way as he did in the book of Acts. Peter indeed would not have healed the crippled beggar in Acts 3:6-7. (NIV, 1990). As Christians, we must strive to emulate the examples and teachings of Jesus.
