Marie Tharp and Sea-Floor Mapping 

Marie Tharp was an American geologist and oceanographic cartographer who, in partnership with Bruce Heezen, created the first scientific map of the Atlantic Ocean floor. Tharp’s work revealed the detailed topography and multi-dimensional geographical landscape of the ocean bottom. Marie Tharp’s map helped cement Wagner’s theory of continental drift and shed new light on landform study and internal processes:

After viewing the ESRI story map please answer the following questions: 

  1. The use of vertical exaggeration and depiction of Tharp’s information as a physiographic diagram revealed, for the first time what about the ocean floor?
  2. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge and its rift valley are clearly evident with details that could not have been revealed or understood with traditional contour maps, why is this? 
  3. What data did Tharp utilize to draft trends related to fracture zones?

Remote Sensing & Aerial Photography

Aerial Photography has been around for more than 150 years and came about from an interest in photography above the ground. It is hypothesized that the first aerial shot in the united states was taken from a balloon in Boston in 1860 by James W. Black. Being able to have access to remote sensing imagery allows for geographers and geologists amongst others to be able to spatially see the workings of landform study.

  • Click on the Features section of the website for access to several showcased historic aerial photos. Select the option for ‘The D-Day Landings’ and examine the aerial photos in this section.
    • What aspects of the actions of the D-Day invasion have been captured through aerial photography?  
    • What particular features of the invasion can you interpret from the images? 
  • Click on the Features section of the website and on the second page Select ‘Camouflage Concealment, and Deception’. It’s hard to hide something as big as an airfield or a warship from overhead cameras-but look closely at the images in the section. 
    • How were airfields, warships, oil refineries, and rocket launching sites concealed from aerial photos?

Google Earth is a powerful tool that renders a 3D representation of the Earth and allows you to create a visual story with the renderings. Reference the 7 Principal Rock-Forming Families topic covered in the Chapter 13 lecture and create a 7 slide presentation on it, listing the following:
