First:
Describe some of the emotions you felt during the film. What aspects of the video had the greatest impact on you and why? During the film, it made me feel sad about how much I didn’t know about the overall impact humans make on the planet. It was encouraging to want to make little changes in my life to make the world better.

  1. Was there any information in the video that was new to you? I learned how exactly pollution works and the significance of how our carbon emissions raise the temperature of the planet.
  2. What topics in the film would you like to explore or research further? Where would you go to find out more information? Climate change as a whole. I have never really gotten an opportunity to learn about how everyday things can impact the planet down to the specifics of why the things we do are damaging.
  3. Who should see this film and for what purpose? Who might be unreceptive to the ideas in the film and why? I think an older generation should watch this film because it seems the younger generation cares more about the planet and sustainability. The older generation might be unreceptive at first but, this video can give the insight of what is happening to the world we live in.
  4. After watching the 11th Hour, what, if any, specific actions do you think you will take? After watching the 11th Hour, I am encouraged to be more mindful of the amount of carbon I produce. So, focusing on reducing energy and the miles on my car.
  5. Share one thing you wrote down while you were watching the film. Why did that particular point stand out to you? 95% of forests are already gone – deserts are spreading and replacing forests. This stood out to me because it puts into perspective how much damage has already been done when this film was made in 2007.

Second Classmate’s comment:
Describe some of the emotions you felt during the film. What aspects of the video had the greatest impact on you and why?
I get really emotional when I think about climate change. I mostly felt anger and sadness, but the film made me feel motivated as well. The emphasis on how important it is to take immediate action stood out to me. Humans have evolved to be the most impactful creatures on the planet, and because of this privilege we have the responsibility to create a culture that interacts with science and the world around us in a sustainable way.
Was there any information in the video that was new to you?
The statement that said that “90% of our makeup as humans as non-human cells.” That is such an impactful piece of information and emphasizes how we are not separate from nature.
What topics in the film would you like to explore or research further? Where would you go to find out more information?
I would like to further research how environmental destruction directly impacts minority communities, aka “environmental racism.” I think the best way to find out more information is by listening to these communities’ and using my privilege to amplify their voices. It is important to use my voice to reach out to politicians to insist on equal access to a clean environment.
Who should see this film and for what purpose? Who might be unreceptive to the ideas in the film and why?
There is an attitude that has been created by humankind that we are separate and greater than the natural world, and that humans can live without any repercussions. This film would be beneficial to those who have not gotten access to climate education. Particularly in the United States there is a disconnect when it comes to climate education. People who may be unreceptive are people that have not been exposed to, or those who have not listened to, this scientific-based evidence. We get most of our information from the media, and there is little coverage in mainstream media of to what extent people are making an uninhabitable planet.
After watching the 11th Hour, what, if any, specific actions do you think you will take?
As an individual it is so important to cut down on waste. I have a tendency to use so much single-use plastics, especially in covid times where reusable cups and grocery bags become more difficult to use in order to be sanitary. I want to ensure that I cut down on waste, especially food waste and single use plastics. Because climate change is a systemic problem, it is also crucial to vote on a local, state, and national level for politicians that prioritize making systemic, cultural environmental changes. In my opinion, this is the most important action one could take.
Share one thing you wrote down while you were watching the film. Why did that particular point stand out to you?
We have the tools and science to make a change, on every level. Especially as a designer it is a global responsibility to contribute to making a difference.

Third classmate’s answers:
Describe some of the emotions you felt during the film. What aspects of the video had the greatest impact on you and why? I felt frustration and sadness, but I also felt hope that things can change. I think the aspect of the video that had the greatest impact on me was the feeling of hope I felt watching the video. It’s easy to feel hopeless when you think about climate change because it seems so big, but there are so many practical steps we can take that have the ability to make big changes over time. I’m hopeful and motivated to make changes.
Was there any information in the video that was new to you? I haven’t heard some of the statistics and technological advancements, but I’ve heard a lot of it before.
What topics in the film would you like to explore or research further? Where would you go to find out more information? I’d like to explore more ideas for sustainable living. I would go to the library to find more information and also look at what others have already done.
Who should see this film and for what purpose? Who might be unreceptive to the ideas in the film and why? Everyone should see films like this to become more aware of the impact of human life on the earth. “People are doing the best they can, given their level of awareness.” People who might be unreceptive are those who directly benefit from industries that are harming the earth. Why would they want to change something that’s making them money?
After watching the 11th Hour, what, if any, specific actions do you think you will take? I think I’d like to make a greater effort to reduce my carbon footprint and implement small lifestyle changes that can have a positive impact on the earth over time.
Share one thing you wrote down while you were watching the film. Why did that particular point stand out to you? We can live off one tenth of the energy we consume today. That stood out to me because that is a crazy estimate. What’s preventing us from doing that? How can we move towards change?
